The sandwedge or the beloved pitching-wedge are the clubs.
Ball position a bit forward but still the hands and the weight in front. You try to give the club asmuch loft as you can, without turning it sideways.
For the beginner, this is already quite an exercise, then the shoulder turn gets longer. Maintain rather less handaction. Try to find out on the range how far can you hit the ball without handaction. This will then help you on the course to know when a shoulder turn is not enough anymore.
Beginner: Even tough the ball is forward in the stance, still do hit down on the ball. That is the way to get the ball up. Swing speed must stay soft and constant. All shots where distance is not the key, require practice swings with a distance feedback. Would this practice swing I just made, make the ball reach the hole? No? Then just another practice swing until you have got the right swing!
Mid-handicaper: as an advanced golfer you must practice this shot. It is exactly what you are left with on longer par 4s after your second shot. You dont yet get there, but you are close. One pitch, one putt - thank you!
Low-handicaper: again distance, spin, roll - thats the music. Learn how to stay calm while swinging through the ball. Use the practice swings to produce comitment. Be sure what is going to happen. Only the landing point counts.
